It was Kuber's birthday party — a lucky St. Patrick's Day celebration — and Sarah arrived late. Karan turned to his sister Radhika and asked, "Who is that?" Cool as ever, when Sarah approached he nodded to her with an aloof "hey." 

It was the first time they were in the same room, though there were existing strings.

As a kid, Karan traveled from Belfast to visit family friends down the street from Sarah’s New Jersey cul-de-sac. Karan was taken by suburban basement culture, thinking Americans really had it good. At that same moment a few houses down, Sarah was blasting Oasis, wishing to be across the pond. Years later as students, they were both in Beijing, and sometimes wonder what would have happened if they had bumped into each other on the Great Wall.

But they met at exactly the right time. 

Where fate failed, family stepped in. Sarah was invited to the party by Kuber’s then girlfriend Trina (now fiancée, or now wife—dependent on when you are reading this!). Trina and Sarah were co-captains of their high school tennis team and reconnected after Sarah’s return from Shanghai. Karan had just moved to New York, so could easily hop on a train to spend the weekend celebrating his brother.

Sarah remembers Karan as confident, with thoughtful questions and an easy laugh. Reflecting on it later, it was the way Karan joyously danced with his siblings at their final stop of the night that won her over. Karan described Sarah as the funniest person he’s met and says now that when she walked through the door he knew his life had changed. When saying goodbye that night, Sarah told Karan she'd reach out next time she was in Greenpoint.

Not two weeks later Karan returned to Philly to "visit Kuber." And to take Sarah on their first date.

They have been inseparable since. 

In 2025, Karan moved to Philly so the two could begin building their life together. In May, somewhere between London and Belfast, they decided they wanted to get married.

This September, they will make their family official: Karan, Sarah, and George—who’s been patiently waiting for someone to watch obscure action movies with.
